What it means
The module detects that engine coolant temperature sensor 1 and ambient air temperature readings do not correlate within the expected limits.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Engine coolant temperature sensor 1 measures engine temperature, while the ambient air temperature sensor measures outside air; the control module compares them to check plausibility. P011E sets when those readings do not correlate as expected, often because one sensor or its wiring reports a biased temperature.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coolant temperature or ambient air temperature sensor drifting or biased
- Faulty sensor wiring or connector
- Poor electrical connection or corrosion
- Less commonly, a module fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Cooling fan runs constantly or not at all
- Cabin heater weak or excessively hot
- Possible long warm-up time or hard cold start
How to diagnose it
- Before starting a cold engine, compare ECT sensor 1 and ambient air temperature live data with the actual conditions around the vehicle.
- Review freeze-frame data and monitor both readings as the engine warms to see which one responds unexpectedly.
- Inspect the ECT sensor 1 and ambient-temperature sensor connectors and wiring for corrosion, loose contacts, or damage.
- Check the cold coolant level and verify that engine warm-up is not unusually slow.
- Test the sensor that appears biased and its circuit against the manufacturer's specification before suspecting the control module.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose ECT sensor 1 or ambient-temperature sensor connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or replace a corroded connector in the circuit with the implausible reading.
- Correct low coolant or repair a thermostat fault if it prevents normal warm-up.
- Replace the biased ECT sensor 1 or ambient-temperature sensor if testing confirms it is out of specification.
Can I keep driving?
A short drive is generally possible if the temperature gauge stays normal and the engine runs normally, but stop if it overheats. The temperature mismatch can affect cold-start fueling and fan decisions, so investigate promptly if fan behavior or warm-up is abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
