What it means
The IAT signal shows intermittent dropouts or jumps that fall outside slope expectations but do not stay above or below threshold long enough to trigger P0112/P0113. Usually a wiring or connector issue.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Intake air temperature sensor 1 measures the temperature of air entering the engine, and the control module uses its signal to adjust fueling and related calculations. P0114 sets when that signal jumps or drops out intermittently, without staying at the consistently low or high input associated with P0112 or P0113.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose or oxidised connector
- Wiring chafed against engine
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Intermittent rough idle or hesitation
- Changes in fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch IAT sensor 1 live data from a cold start through warm-up to spot sudden jumps or dropouts.
- With the engine off, inspect sensor 1's connector for looseness, corrosion, damaged pins, or moisture.
- Trace the sensor 1 wiring where it passes near the engine and check for chafing, heat damage, or stretched sections.
- With live data displayed, gently move the connector and harness to see whether vibration or movement makes the reading unstable.
- If the fault remains, test sensor 1's signal and wiring continuity while flexing the harness, following the manufacturer's circuit specification.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose IAT sensor 1 connector.
- Clean corroded connector contacts or replace a damaged connector.
- Repair chafed or heat-damaged wiring in the sensor 1 circuit.
- Replace IAT sensor 1 if its signal remains erratic after the circuit checks.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, a short, gentle drive is usually possible, but avoid hard acceleration if hesitation occurs. Erratic intake temperature data can affect fueling and emissions, and may cause poor running or fuel economy.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
