OBD-II fault code

P0106: Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor Range/Performance

What it means

The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor signal is implausible relative to throttle position and engine speed. The ECU expects MAP to rise with throttle opening and fall under deceleration; deviation triggers the code.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The MAP sensor measures pressure inside the intake manifold, and the ECM checks whether that pressure changes plausibly with throttle position and engine speed. P0106 sets when the signal is present but does not follow the expected pattern, such as rising with throttle opening or falling during deceleration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Vacuum hose to MAP sensor cracked or detached
  2. MAP sensor drifting outside specification
  3. Intake manifold gasket leaking

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and graph live MAP, throttle position, and RPM at key-on engine-off, idle, and a gentle throttle change to identify where the pattern becomes implausible.
  2. Inspect any MAP vacuum hose for cracks, disconnection, blockage, or kinks, and inspect the sensor port for deposits.
  3. Check the intake manifold and gasket area for leaks that could alter manifold pressure.
  4. Inspect the MAP connector and wiring, then test its power, ground, and signal against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and intake are sound, compare MAP response with the manufacturer's specification to check for a drifting sensor.
  6. Repair the confirmed hose, leak, wiring, or sensor fault and repeat the live-data check under similar conditions.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or replace a cracked, kinked, or blocked MAP hose, where fitted.
  • Repair a leaking intake manifold gasket or other confirmed intake leak.
  • Clean an obstructed MAP sensor port using an appropriate method.
  • Repair a loose connector or damaged MAP circuit wiring.
  • Replace a MAP sensor that responds incorrectly after the hose, intake, and circuit have been verified.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently only if the engine runs steadily; an implausible MAP reading can cause poor fueling, hesitation, or stalling. Avoid heavy loads and stop if the engine starts running erratically.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
