What it means
The intake air temperature readings used by the system do not agree within the expected limits. The code identifies a correlation fault; it does not by itself identify which sensor is faulty.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake air temperature system uses multiple readings to estimate the temperature of air entering the engine. The control module compares the sensor readings associated with bank 1 and sets P00CE when they disagree beyond the expected range; the code does not identify which sensor is wrong.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- One intake air temperature sensor reading inaccurately
- Loose, corroded, or damaged sensor connector
- Open or shorted sensor wiring
- Sensor exposed to an unusual heat source or airflow condition
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible hesitation or reduced power
- Fuel economy may worsen
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare all available intake-air-temperature readings on a cold engine, when they should be broadly consistent with ambient conditions.
- Identify the intake air temperature sensors associated with bank 1 and inspect their connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or shorts.
- Check that neither sensor is exposed to an unusual heat source or airflow condition that could explain a real temperature difference.
- Compare the bank 1 sensor readings during warm-up and engine operation to find which reading diverges or behaves implausibly.
- Test the suspect sensor and its wiring against the manufacturer's specification before replacing any part.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose bank 1 intake air temperature sensor connector.
- Repair damaged, open, or shorted sensor wiring.
- Correct an unusual heat or airflow exposure affecting a sensor reading.
- Replace the bank 1 intake air temperature sensor that fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, short local trips are generally reasonable, but watch for hesitation or reduced power. Address the fault soon because inaccurate intake temperature data can affect fuel economy and emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
