OBD-II fault code

P00A1: Charge Air Cooler Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Bank 2

What it means

The charge air cooler temperature sensor signal for Bank 2 is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 charge air cooler temperature sensor reports the temperature of compressed air leaving that bank's cooler. P00A1 sets when its signal is electrically plausible but falls outside the expected range or changes in a way the control module considers inconsistent.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor reading drifted
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine performance or boost
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare the Bank 2 temperature reading with ambient temperature and any available reading from the other bank.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 sensor mounting and connector for looseness, poor seating, corrosion, or signs that the sensor is not firmly coupled to its measurement point.
  3. Check live Bank 2 temperature data from a cold start through warm-up and look for readings that drift, lag, or disagree with operating conditions.
  4. Inspect the Bank 2 signal, reference, and ground wiring for damage and test them using the manufacturer's specifications.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test or substitute the Bank 2 sensor only as directed by the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure the Bank 2 sensor and correct loose mounting that can distort its response.
  • Repair poor connector contact or damaged wiring in the Bank 2 sensor circuit.
  • Replace a Bank 2 temperature sensor that drifts or fails the specified response test.
  • Address a confirmed control-module fault only after sensor and circuit checks pass.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive gently if the engine behaves normally, but incorrect Bank 2 temperature data can lead to reduced boost or poor fuel economy. Avoid sustained high load if power is reduced.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
