OBD-II fault code

P008E: Fuel Cooler Pump Control Circuit High

What it means

Control voltage of the fuel cooler pump is above the expected range — short to power or open ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The fuel cooler pump circulates fuel through a cooler on vehicles equipped with that system. The control module sets P008E when the pump control circuit voltage is higher than expected, which can point to a control wire shorted to power, a poor ground, or a connection fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Fuel system warning light, if equipped
  • Reduced engine performance in hot conditions

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note whether the fuel-system warning or reduced performance occurred in hot conditions.
  2. Inspect the pump harness for chafing against a powered wire, pinching, water ingress, and loose or pushed-back connector terminals.
  3. Check the pump connector and ground path for corrosion or a poor connection that could leave the control circuit voltage high.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, test for a short to battery voltage and verify circuit continuity and ground integrity.
  5. Compare circuit readings with the manufacturer's specification and check module control only after the harness and pump circuit pass.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to battery power or another powered circuit.
  • Repair a pinched harness and secure it away from the power source.
  • Clean or replace corroded terminals and restore connector sealing.
  • Repair an open or high-resistance ground connection.
  • Replace the pump or control component only if circuit testing confirms the fault lies there.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently and avoid prolonged heavy loads in hot weather because the fuel cooler pump may not be controlled correctly. If performance falls or a fuel-system warning appears, stop and have the fault checked before continuing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
