What it means
The low-pressure (lift pump) fuel pressure is below the expected value. Insufficient supply to the high-pressure pump leads to power loss and possible HP pump cavitation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The low-pressure fuel system, often supplied by a lift pump, feeds fuel to the high-pressure pump. The control module sets P008A when low-side pressure is below the expected level, which can starve the high-pressure pump even if rail pressure is also affected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel filter clogged
- Lift pump weak or failing
- Leak or air ingress in low-pressure line
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Loss of power, especially under acceleration
- Hard starting or extended cranking
- Engine may stall
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check low-side pressure and commanded pump operation in live data, especially during acceleration or cranking.
- Inspect the low-pressure lines and connections for leaks, kinks, loose fittings, or signs of air entering the fuel supply.
- Check the fuel filter for restriction and verify fuel flow to the lift pump or high-pressure pump as applicable.
- Measure low-pressure supply using the vehicle's specified procedure and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the filter and lines are clear, test lift-pump output and check the low-side pressure sensor and circuit for inaccurate readings.
Common fixes
- Replace a clogged low-pressure fuel filter.
- Repair a leaking, kinked, or air-ingress-prone low-pressure line or connection.
- Repair wiring or replace a faulty low-side pressure sensor if its signal is inaccurate.
- Replace a weak lift pump if output testing confirms insufficient pressure.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads; inadequate supply can cause power loss or stalling and may make the high-pressure pump cavitate. Stop driving if the engine stalls or loses power unpredictably, and arrange diagnosis before further use.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
