What it means
The control module detects fuel rail or system pressure below the expected value. The code does not specify whether the vehicle uses direct injection or identify a particular pump or regulator failure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The control module compares measured fuel rail or system pressure with the pressure the engine needs. P0087 sets when pressure falls below the expected level, but the code alone does not identify which pump, regulator, or pressure stage is responsible.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- High-pressure fuel pump worn
- Pressure regulator stuck open
- Fuel filter clogged
- Injector leaking back
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Loss of power, especially under acceleration
- Hard starting or extended cranking
- Engine may stall
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded with actual fuel pressure in live data, especially during the acceleration or load conditions that set the code.
- Check fuel level and inspect accessible fuel lines and connectors for leaks, kinks, damage, or loose connections.
- Check the fuel filter for restriction and verify low-pressure fuel supply to the high-pressure pump where the system provides a test point.
- Compare rail pressure during cranking and under load with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the shortfall is in supply or rail-pressure control.
- If supply is adequate, test regulator operation and check for injector leak-back using the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Replace a clogged fuel filter.
- Repair a leaking, kinked, or restricted fuel line.
- Replace a faulty pressure regulator.
- Repair or replace a worn high-pressure fuel pump if testing confirms it cannot meet demand.
- Repair or replace an injector that fails the specified leak-back test.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads; low fuel pressure can cause sudden power loss or stalling. If it stalls, is difficult to restart, or loses power in traffic, stop driving and arrange recovery because continued operation may damage the fuel system.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
