What it means
The charge air cooler temperature sensors of bank 1 and bank 2 deviate from each other beyond plausible limits. One of the two has drifted.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The charge air cooler temperature sensors report the temperatures of compressed intake air on bank 1 and bank 2. The control module compares the two readings, and this code sets when their difference exceeds a plausible range; one sensor may have drifted, or the banks may have different airflow or operating conditions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- One charge air cooler temperature sensor has drifted or failed
- Wiring or connector fault affecting one sensor
- Different operating conditions or airflow between banks
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine performance or boost
- Poor fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 and bank 2 readings under the recorded engine conditions for an implausible difference.
- With the engine cool and then during warm-up, compare both live readings with each other and with ambient temperature to identify which bank appears inconsistent.
- Inspect both sensors' connectors and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or routing that could affect just one bank.
- Check the reference, ground, and signal circuits for both sensors against the manufacturer's wiring information.
- If the circuits are sound, test each sensor against the manufacturer's specification and check for airflow or charge-air-cooler differences between banks.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or corroded connector on the sensor whose reading is inconsistent.
- Repair damaged wiring affecting the bank 1 or bank 2 sensor circuit.
- Replace the charge air cooler temperature sensor on the bank that fails testing.
- Correct a confirmed restriction or airflow problem affecting one bank.
- Repair a control-module fault only after both sensors and their circuits pass checks.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, gentle driving may be possible, but avoid sustained high boost, towing, or hard acceleration until the readings are checked. Incorrect temperature information can lead to reduced performance and poor fuel economy.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
