What it means
The control module detects that the manifold absolute pressure and barometric pressure readings do not correlate as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The MAP sensor reports pressure in the intake manifold, while barometric pressure represents the surrounding air pressure. The control module compares the readings and sets P0069 when they do not agree as expected, which can happen if the MAP sensor has drifted or its vacuum hose leaks.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- MAP sensor failed or drifted
- Vacuum hose to MAP sensor leaking
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Reduced engine power
- Poor acceleration
- Rough or unstable idle
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare MAP and barometric pressure readings with the engine off, when they should be reasonably consistent.
- Inspect the MAP sensor connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or poor contact.
- If this vehicle uses a separate vacuum hose to the MAP sensor, check it for cracks, loose connections, blockage, or leaks.
- With a scan tool, compare MAP readings at idle and as engine speed changes for a stable, plausible response.
- Test the MAP sensor circuit and sensor response against the manufacturer's specification before replacing the sensor.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose, damaged, or corroded MAP sensor connector.
- Replace a cracked or leaking MAP vacuum hose.
- Repair damaged MAP sensor wiring.
- Replace the MAP sensor if its readings fail the manufacturer's checks.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly and power is normal, a short, gentle trip may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration. Stop if it runs roughly or loses power, since incorrect pressure readings can affect fueling and drivability.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
