OBD-II fault code

P0060: HO2S Heater Resistance Bank 2 Sensor 2

What it means

Heater resistance out of range on bank 2 sensor 2 (post-cat). Same diagnostic as P0053 on second bank, post-cat.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2 Sensor 2 is the heated oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter on the engine's second cylinder bank. Its heater brings the sensor to operating temperature sooner, and P0060 sets when the control module detects that this sensor's heater resistance is outside the expected range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oxygen-sensor heater element worn or out of specification
  2. Damaged heater wiring or connector
  3. Poor electrical connection
  4. Oxygen sensor failure

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Oxygen-sensor heater may warm slowly
  • Fuel economy may decrease
  • Emissions may increase

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for other oxygen-sensor or heater codes to see whether the fault is limited to Bank 2 Sensor 2.
  2. Locate the downstream Bank 2 Sensor 2 and inspect its connector and heat-exposed wiring for damage, corrosion, or a loose fit.
  3. Check the sensor heater circuit fuse and connector supply and ground using the wiring diagram.
  4. Measure Bank 2 Sensor 2 heater resistance with the sensor disconnected and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If heater resistance and wiring are in specification, follow the manufacturer's procedure to check the heater control circuit.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or heat-chafed wiring to Bank 2 Sensor 2.
  • Clean or repair a loose or corroded sensor connector.
  • Replace Bank 2 Sensor 2 if its heater resistance is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair the heater circuit fuse, supply, ground, or control fault identified by testing.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is usually driveable if it runs normally, but the downstream Bank 2 sensor may take longer to warm up and emissions can increase. Avoid ignoring the warning if the engine begins running poorly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
