OBD-II fault code

P003A: Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Control A Position Exceeded Learning Limit

What it means

The control module detected that the position of turbocharger or supercharger boost control A exceeded its learned limit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Boost Control A is the turbocharger or supercharger boost-control mechanism monitored by the module; its actuator position is compared with a learned operating limit. P003A sets when the A mechanism moves beyond that learned limit, which can point to a worn or sticking actuator or loose or stretched linkage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wastegate actuator worn or sticking
  2. Linkage rod stretched or loose

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine performance

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual Boost Control A position readings with a scan tool to see when the learned limit is exceeded.
  2. Inspect the Boost Control A actuator and linkage for looseness, a stretched rod, binding, or visible wear.
  3. Check the actuator connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could affect position feedback or control.
  4. Use the manufacturer's procedure to command Boost Control A through its range and observe whether its position follows smoothly.
  5. Test the actuator and position feedback against the manufacturer's specification before considering any relearn procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure or adjust loose Boost Control A linkage as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Repair damaged actuator wiring or connector contacts.
  • Replace a worn or sticking Boost Control A actuator.
  • Repair or replace a worn boost-control mechanism that prevents the actuator reaching its learned range.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced power or limp mode can limit acceleration, so avoid hard acceleration, towing, and situations that require quick passing. Have the boost-control fault checked soon, and stop if the vehicle cannot maintain a safe speed or develops abnormal engine behavior.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
