What it means
VES sensor reading implausible. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The variable-effort steering sensor reports steering-system information to the control module. This range/performance code sets when the reading is implausible or does not track expected system behavior, even if the signal is not simply high or low.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor reading drifted
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review steering and ABS codes to establish the conditions when the sensor reading became implausible.
- Inspect the sensor mounting for looseness or movement that could damp or distort its signal.
- Examine the sensor connector and harness for chafing, water ingress, pushed-back pins, or intermittent contact.
- Watch live sensor data while turning the steering and gently moving the harness to look for drift, dropouts, or changes that do not match steering input.
- Check sensor power, ground, and signal integrity using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- If mounting and wiring are sound, test the sensor against the manufacturer's specification and verify module inputs.
Common fixes
- Secure the sensor mounting and correct any looseness.
- Clean and reseat the connector, then repair damaged seals or terminals.
- Repair chafed wiring or poor pin contact.
- Replace a sensor that drifts or fails the specified tests.
- Repair the control module only if sensor and circuit checks pass.
Can I keep driving?
ABS and stability control may be deactivated, with possible reduction in brake assist. Avoid relying on those aids, drive cautiously if the vehicle responds normally, and stop if steering or braking becomes abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
