OBD-II fault code

C0622: Variable Effort Steering Lock/Safety Actuator Control Circuit High

What it means

VES safety lock actuator control voltage above expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The variable effort steering lock or safety actuator is controlled electrically as part of the steering system's safety functions. C0622 sets when its control circuit voltage is above the expected range, often because the wire is shorted to battery positive or a connector has been damaged.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan steering and chassis modules and save freeze-frame voltage and related codes to establish when the high circuit reading occurred.
  2. Inspect the lock or safety actuator connector and harness for pinching against B+ wiring, chafing, water intrusion, corrosion, or backed-out pins.
  3. Watch live circuit data while gently moving the harness to see whether the high reading changes with harness position.
  4. Test the control wire for a short to battery positive and verify connector terminals using the manufacturer's wiring information and procedure.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test the actuator and module output according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to or pinched against battery positive.
  • Repair damaged connector terminals or restore proper pin retention.
  • Replace harness sections with damaged insulation that cannot be reliably repaired.
  • Repair or replace the actuator or control module if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

The steering lock or safety actuator may not operate correctly, and stability functions may be reduced. If steering or locking behavior is abnormal, stop safely and have the vehicle inspected before driving further.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
