OBD-II fault code

C05EF: 4WD/AWD Clutch B Position Control Error

What it means

4WD/AWD Clutch B Position Control Error: the actual position deviates from the commanded position. This affects engagement of the all-wheel-drive clutch.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch B in the 4WD/AWD system is moved by an actuator, and position feedback lets the control module compare its actual position with the commanded position. This code sets when that feedback shows clutch B has not reached the requested position, which can limit or disable AWD operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator motor or position feedback fault
  2. Clutch mechanism binding or excessive wear
  3. Low or contaminated clutch fluid, where applicable
  4. Wiring or connector fault
  5. Position calibration or relearn needed

Symptoms

  • 4WD/AWD operation may be limited or disabled

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live 4WD/AWD data for the commanded and reported clutch B positions when the error sets.
  2. Inspect the clutch B actuator connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or moisture that could disrupt position feedback.
  3. Check clutch fluid level and condition if applicable, because poor fluid condition or level can make the mechanism bind or move slowly.
  4. Use the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to command clutch B through its travel and observe whether position feedback follows smoothly.
  5. If feedback or movement remains incorrect, inspect the actuator, position sensor, and clutch mechanism for wear or binding.
  6. Perform the manufacturer's position calibration or relearn procedure if the hardware and wiring checks pass.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the actuator or position-feedback connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or terminals affecting the actuator or position signal.
  • Service contaminated or low clutch fluid where applicable.
  • Repair or replace a faulty actuator or position-feedback sensor.
  • Free or repair a binding or worn clutch mechanism, then perform the required calibration.

Can I keep driving?

AWD may be limited or unavailable, so avoid conditions that depend on all-wheel-drive traction. Continued actuator attempts against a binding clutch can worsen mechanical wear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
