OBD-II fault code

C05D3: Driver Applied Pressure Higher Than Expected

What it means

The measured driver-applied brake pressure is higher than the control module expects. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The brake control module compares measured driver-applied brake pressure with the pressure it expects from the current braking conditions. This code sets when the reported pressure is higher than expected, but the code alone cannot distinguish a pressure-sensor problem from a hydraulic fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Brake pressure sensor or circuit fault
  2. Hydraulic system fault

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control may be disabled

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame and live brake data for driver-applied pressure, pedal input, and related pressure readings to see when the unexpected high value occurs.
  2. Check the brake-fluid level and inspect the master cylinder, hydraulic lines, hoses, and wheels for leaks or visible damage.
  3. Compare pressure-sensor readings at rest and during gentle pedal application, checking for a value that is implausible or inconsistent with pedal input.
  4. Inspect the pressure-sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or shorts.
  5. Test the pressure-sensor supply, ground, and signal circuit against the manufacturer's specification; if readings remain plausible, investigate the hydraulic system using the service procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged pressure-sensor connector or wire.
  • Correct a brake-fluid leak or other confirmed hydraulic fault.
  • Replace a pressure sensor that fails the manufacturer's circuit or plausibility checks.
  • Repair the hydraulic control or master-cylinder fault identified by testing.

Can I keep driving?

If the brake pedal feels abnormal, braking is reduced, or a leak is present, do not drive the vehicle. Otherwise drive cautiously to repair, allowing extra stopping distance because ABS or stability control may be limited.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
