What it means
Steering wheel angle and yaw rate sensor signals do not correlate during driving.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The stability control module compares steering wheel angle with yaw rate, which shows how quickly the vehicle is rotating around its vertical axis. During driving, this code sets when the yaw rate does not agree with the turn implied by the steering angle. Misalignment, a disturbed yaw sensor, tire pressure differences, or wiring faults can create that mismatch.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Steering wheel angle sensor misaligned or out of calibration
- Yaw rate sensor fault or mounting disturbance
- Uneven or incorrect tire pressures affecting vehicle motion
- Wiring or connector fault at either sensor
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read the stability-control freeze-frame data and live steering-angle and yaw-rate values to see when the mismatch occurred.
- Check all tire pressures and tire condition, since uneven rolling can change the vehicle's response in a turn.
- Inspect the steering-angle and yaw-rate sensor connectors and wiring for damage, loose pins, corrosion, or signs that the yaw sensor mounting was disturbed.
- With the vehicle stationary and on level ground, check whether the steering-angle reading is plausible with the wheels pointed straight ahead.
- Compare both sensor readings during a controlled turn using scan-tool data, then check their circuits and calibration against the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct tire pressures and address mismatched or damaged tires.
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged sensor connector or wiring.
- Secure the yaw rate sensor in its correct mounting position.
- Calibrate or align the steering wheel angle sensor according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Replace a sensor only if its readings remain faulty after wiring and mounting checks.
Can I keep driving?
Drive cautiously only if steering and braking feel normal; avoid high speeds and sharp turns because stability control may be unavailable. If brake assist is reduced or the vehicle behaves unpredictably, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
