OBD-II fault code

C05AB: Brake Blending Separation Valve Performance

What it means

Brake blending separation valve does not respond as expected — used to isolate hydraulic and regenerative brake circuits on EVs/hybrids.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

In hybrid and electric vehicles, the brake blending separation valve helps the braking system manage the relationship between regenerative braking and hydraulic braking. The control module sets this performance code when the valve does not respond as expected to its command, though this code alone does not establish that it is stuck open or closed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Separation valve sticking or binding
  2. Valve electrical or actuator fault
  3. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
  4. Control module fault

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live valve command and response data to see when the separation valve fails to follow its command.
  2. Inspect the valve connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, damaged insulation, or signs of water entry.
  3. Check the valve's power, ground, and control circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Use the manufacturer's diagnostic routine to command the valve and assess whether it moves or its reported position changes as expected.
  5. If electrical checks pass but response remains incorrect, test the valve mechanically and check related brake blending inputs before condemning the control module.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact at the separation valve.
  • Clean and reseat the valve connector, replacing damaged seals or terminals.
  • Replace a sticking or failed separation valve after confirming its command and circuit are correct.
  • Update or replace the brake control module only if its output or software is identified as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Brake blending, ABS, or stability control may be limited, and brake assist may be reduced. Avoid high-speed driving; if braking feel or stopping performance changes, stop safely and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
