What it means
Brake System Control Module / Electronic Brake Boost Controller hydraulic unit performance fault — internal hydraulic actuator does not respond as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BSCM or EBBC controls a hydraulic unit that helps manage braking pressure and, where fitted, brake assist. This code sets when the hydraulic actuator’s response does not match what the brake control module expects during operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal hydraulic unit fault
- Hydraulic actuator sticking or failing
- Electrical connection or wiring fault
- Control module fault
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Scan the brake system for related codes and freeze-frame data to identify when the hydraulic unit failed to respond as expected.
- Check battery and charging voltage because low or unstable supply can disrupt hydraulic unit operation.
- Inspect the hydraulic unit’s electrical connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, looseness, or poor grounds.
- Check for external hydraulic leaks or other brake hydraulic faults that could restrict the unit’s response.
- Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure to command and evaluate the hydraulic actuator and module.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged hydraulic-unit connector.
- Repair wiring or ground faults affecting the BSCM/EBBC hydraulic unit.
- Correct an external hydraulic fault that interferes with actuator operation.
- Replace the hydraulic actuator or unit if testing confirms an internal mechanical failure.
- Replace the control module only if its tests confirm an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
ABS, stability control, or brake assist may be reduced, while ordinary braking may still work. Drive cautiously with extra stopping distance; if the pedal feels abnormal or braking is reduced, stop and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
