What it means
The driveline control module monitors rear differential actuator B and sets this code when it detects a fault with the actuator or its operation.
How it works
Rear differential actuator B controls a separate commanded function in the 4WD/AWD rear differential. The driveline module monitors actuator B's electrical operation and response, and sets C0097 when actuator B fails its subtype-specific operation check.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Failed rear differential actuator
- Damaged wiring or connector
- Power or ground fault
- Actuator or differential mechanism binding
Symptoms
- AWD or 4WD warning
- AWD may be unavailable or limited
- Rear differential may not engage or disengage correctly
How to diagnose it
- Read the driveline module's subtype details and freeze-frame data, and note what rear differential action was requested when the fault occurred.
- Inspect actuator B and its rear differential connector and harness for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or strain.
- Check actuator B's power, ground, and control wiring for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
- Use a scan tool to command the function associated with actuator B, if supported, and observe whether the actuator responds and the reported state changes.
- If the electrical path is sound, check for mechanical binding and test actuator B against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the actuator B connector.
- Correct an actuator B power or ground fault.
- Replace rear differential actuator B if it fails testing with a sound circuit.
- Repair a binding rear differential mechanism that prevents actuator B from completing its movement.
Can I keep driving?
AWD/4WD may be limited or unavailable, and the rear differential may not engage or disengage correctly. Avoid relying on four-wheel traction in difficult conditions and limit towing or other demanding use until the fault is diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
