OBD-II fault code

C0073: Delivered Driving Torque (Subfault)

What it means

This code identifies a fault associated with delivered driving torque information. The specific failure depends on the diagnostic subtype.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light

How it works

The traction or stability system uses delivered driving torque information to know how much engine torque is actually reaching the vehicle. This subfault code concerns that reported delivered torque value or its communication from the engine control module; the subtype identifies the specific mismatch or message fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. ECM/TCS communication issue

Symptoms

  • Traction or stability-control warning light
  • Traction control may be limited or disabled

How to diagnose it

  1. Read the traction/stability module's subtype, freeze-frame data, and companion engine-control codes to determine the recorded torque-information fault.
  2. Check whether the engine control module has communication or powertrain faults that could interrupt its torque reports.
  3. Compare delivered-torque data shown by the engine and traction/stability modules, if available, under the conditions recorded in the freeze frame.
  4. Inspect relevant module connectors, power and grounds, and the vehicle communication wiring for damage or poor connections.
  5. If connections and companion faults do not explain the mismatch, follow the manufacturer's communication and torque-data tests before suspecting a module.

Common fixes

  • Resolve related engine-control faults that prevent valid delivered-torque reporting.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged module connectors and communication wiring.
  • Correct module power or ground faults affecting torque-message exchange.
  • Repair or replace a module only after manufacturer-guided testing confirms it is not reporting or receiving torque data correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Traction or stability assistance may be reduced if the system cannot use delivered-torque information. Drive smoothly, avoid low-traction conditions and hard acceleration, and arrange diagnosis if the warning persists.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
