OBD-II fault code

C0033: Right Front Tone Wheel

What it means

This code identifies a fault associated with the right-front tone wheel used by the wheel-speed sensing system. The base code alone does not establish whether the wheel, sensor, wiring, or another part of the signal path is at fault.

How it works

The right-front tone wheel or magnetic encoder provides the repeating target that lets the ABS system calculate right-front wheel speed. The ABS module sets this code when the right-front signal pattern is missing or inconsistent; a sensor, gap, wiring, or bearing installation issue can produce the same result.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Damaged or cracked tone wheel
  2. Rust or debris affecting the tone wheel
  3. Incorrect wheel bearing installation
  4. Excessive sensor-to-wheel gap
  5. Wheel speed sensor or wiring fault

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light
  • Traction control warning
  • Stability control warning
  • ABS may not operate correctly

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS codes and freeze-frame data first, noting the right-front wheel-speed value and any related sensor codes.
  2. Compare live right-front speed with the other wheels during slow rotation and look for a drop or irregular pattern.
  3. Inspect the right-front tone wheel or encoder for cracks, corrosion, debris, looseness, or damage.
  4. Check right-front sensor seating and the sensor-to-wheel gap, paying attention to recent wheel-bearing or hub work.
  5. Inspect the right-front sensor connector and harness for corrosion, broken insulation, or movement-related damage.
  6. Test the right-front sensor signal and wiring using the manufacturer's procedure before condemning the ABS module.

Common fixes

  • Remove debris or corrosion from the right-front tone-wheel area.
  • Repair a damaged right-front sensor connector or wiring section.
  • Correct sensor seating or an improper gap according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Correct a misinstalled bearing or hub that places the right-front encoder incorrectly.
  • Replace a cracked right-front tone wheel or encoder, or the associated assembly if integrated.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may have reduced ABS, traction control, or stability control, even if ordinary braking remains. Drive cautiously and allow more stopping distance, especially on wet or loose surfaces.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
