What it means
The traction control system monitors valve 1 in control channel B to regulate hydraulic pressure during traction-control operation. It sets this code when the valve’s electrical response or operation is outside the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The traction control system uses hydraulic valves to adjust wheel-brake pressure when a driven wheel loses grip. The ABS/TCS module monitors valve 1 in control channel B for the expected electrical response and hydraulic action; it sets C0003 when that response or operation is outside its expected range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty or stuck valve
- Open or shorted valve wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
- ABS/TCS control module fault
- Hydraulic contamination or restriction
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read the ABS/TCS module’s stored and pending codes and freeze-frame data to identify when the channel B valve fault occurred and whether supply or communication faults accompany it.
- Inspect the ABS hydraulic control unit connector and the wiring serving channel B valve 1 for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or damage.
- Use the scan tool’s supported ABS/TCS tests to command channel B valve 1 and compare its response with the module’s expected operation.
- With the system safely disabled as specified by the manufacturer, test the valve 1 circuit for opens and shorts and check the valve coil against the manufacturer’s specification.
- If wiring and valve tests pass, check for hydraulic contamination or restriction and assess the ABS/TCS module after verifying its power, grounds, and connections.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the channel B valve 1 connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Replace a failed channel B valve 1 if it is serviceable separately.
- Correct contaminated brake fluid or a restricted hydraulic passage using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Repair or replace the ABS/TCS hydraulic control unit if testing confirms an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Braking may remain available, but ABS and stability or traction control can be disabled, and brake assistance may be reduced. Avoid slippery roads and hard braking, and stop safely if braking feels abnormal; have the fault assessed promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
