OBD-II fault code

B0047: Left Curtain Deployment Loop Short to Ground

What it means

The left curtain airbag deployment loop is shorted to ground; the SRS module inhibits deployment.

How it works

The restraint control module monitors the left curtain airbag deployment loop for unintended contact with ground. B0047 sets when that loop is shorted to ground, and the module may inhibit deployment of the left curtain airbag.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Chafed or pinched wiring contacting ground
  2. Damaged insulation in the left curtain airbag circuit
  3. Shorted connector or terminal
  4. Fault in the restraint control module

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Use an SRS-capable scan tool to record the code's subfault and event data, including whether the short is present now or occurred intermittently.
  2. Power down the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer, then inspect accessible left curtain wiring for pinching, chafing, damaged insulation, or recent trim and headliner work.
  3. Trace the left curtain circuit using the wiring diagram and check for a short to ground with the manufacturer's SRS-safe procedure.
  4. Inspect the left curtain connector and terminals for damage or conductive debris, and test the harness in sections as specified to locate the short.
  5. If the harness and connector are clear, follow the prescribed tests to assess the curtain module and restraint control module.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or pinched wiring contacting the vehicle body in the left curtain circuit.
  • Replace or repair damaged insulation or a shorted connector using the manufacturer's SRS procedure.
  • Replace the left curtain module if the specified test identifies an internal short.
  • Repair or replace the restraint control module only after circuit and module testing confirms it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

The left curtain airbag may be inhibited and fail to deploy in a side impact or rollover; have the fault repaired promptly and avoid carrying passengers beside the affected area until then. Do not probe or reposition SRS wiring without the manufacturer's safety procedure.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
