Amber and yellow lights

Low washer fluid

What it means

The washer-fluid reservoir is low or the level sensor has detected a low level. Amber commonly means refill soon; the symbol and colour vary by manufacturer, and some vehicles have no level warning.

What the symbol looks like: A windscreen with spray jets or droplets commonly indicates that washer fluid is low.

Why it comes on

  • Washer fluid has been used up through normal cleaning
  • Fluid has leaked from the reservoir, hose, or washer system
  • The level sensor or its wiring has failed
  • The reservoir was not filled after recent service

What to do

  1. Refill the reservoir with suitable washer fluid, following the owner's manual.
  2. In cold weather, use fluid rated for the conditions.
  3. Check for visible leaks if the warning returns soon after refilling.
  4. If the reservoir is full but the warning remains, have the level sensor checked.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually continue driving, but ensure the windscreen stays clear and stop safely if you cannot clean it. Avoid using plain water in freezing conditions, which can freeze in the system.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
