Amber and yellow lights

Traction control

What it means

A flashing symbol usually means traction control is reducing wheelspin; a steady amber light usually means the system is off or has detected a fault. The symbol, colour, and whether steady or flashing behaviour indicates a fault vary by manufacturer.

What the symbol looks like: A car seen from behind at a slight angle with two wavy skid lines under it.

Why it comes on

  • Wheels are slipping on a wet, icy, loose, or uneven surface.
  • Traction control was switched off.
  • A wheel-speed sensor or its wiring has a fault.
  • A fault in the ABS or traction-control system.

What to do

  1. If it is flashing, ease off the accelerator and steer smoothly.
  2. Check the owner’s manual for the meaning of a steady light on your vehicle.
  3. If you switched the system off, turn it back on when safe.
  4. If it stays on after restarting, arrange a diagnostic check.

Can I keep driving?

A flashing light during wheelspin is usually expected; slow down and avoid sudden acceleration. If it stays on, drive cautiously and avoid slippery conditions because traction assistance may be reduced.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
