Amber and yellow lights

Low tyre pressure (TPMS)

What it means

The tyre pressure monitoring system has detected that one or more tyres may be underinflated. Amber usually means to check tyre pressures promptly; the light’s behaviour and thresholds vary by manufacturer.

What the symbol looks like: A cross-section of a tyre with an exclamation mark inside it.

Why it comes on

  • One or more tyres have lost pressure.
  • Cold weather has lowered tyre pressure.
  • A tyre has a puncture or leak.
  • Tyres were rotated, replaced, or inflated and the system needs to be reset, if applicable.

What to do

  1. Slow down and look for a visibly damaged or flat tyre.
  2. If a tyre looks flat or handling changes, stop somewhere safe and do not continue on it.
  3. When safe, check all tyre pressures against the vehicle’s placard or owner’s manual.
  4. Inflate tyres to the specified cold pressures and check for leaks.
  5. Follow the manual’s instructions to reset or recalibrate the system, if required.

Can I keep driving?

If no tyre is visibly damaged and the vehicle handles normally, drive carefully to a safe place to check pressures. Avoid high speeds and long trips until the pressures are corrected; stop if a tyre is flat or the vehicle becomes unstable.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
