Amber and yellow lights

Suspension fault

What it means

The vehicle has detected a problem with the suspension or, on some models, its ride-height or damping system. Amber usually means have it checked soon; the symbol and colour vary by manufacturer, and a red warning or an unusually low, unstable, or harsh-riding vehicle may signal a more urgent fault.

What the symbol looks like: A car above a pair of wavy lines, sometimes with an exclamation mark, commonly represents a suspension fault.

Why it comes on

  • Fault in an electronic damper or suspension control
  • Air-suspension leak or compressor problem
  • Ride-height sensor or wiring fault
  • Low system voltage or a blown fuse
  • Suspension component damage

What to do

  1. Slow down and assess whether the vehicle is leaning, unusually low, or difficult to control.
  2. If handling is poor, a wheel is rubbing, or the vehicle is very low, stop somewhere safe and arrange recovery.
  3. If it feels normal and the warning is amber, avoid rough roads and heavy loads.
  4. Check the owner's manual for the warning's model-specific meaning.
  5. Arrange a prompt inspection by a qualified repairer.

Can I keep driving?

Continue only if the vehicle feels stable and the warning is amber; drive gently and avoid high speeds and rough roads. Stop safely and arrange recovery if handling changes, the vehicle sits very low, or the warning is red.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
