Amber and yellow lights

Steering lock

What it means

This commonly indicates that the steering lock is engaged, is not releasing, or has a fault. Amber usually means check the system, but colour and whether the light appears during normal locking vary by manufacturer; consult the owner’s manual.

What the symbol looks like: A steering wheel with a padlock is a common steering-lock symbol, though the exact design varies by vehicle.

Why it comes on

  • The steering lock engaged after the vehicle was switched off
  • The steering wheel is pressing against the lock
  • The key or keyless fob is not detected
  • A weak vehicle or fob battery
  • A fault in the steering-lock mechanism or its wiring

What to do

  1. Stop in a safe place and make sure the vehicle is in Park or neutral with the parking brake applied.
  2. Follow the owner’s manual instructions to unlock the steering; gently ease pressure on the wheel while trying the normal start procedure.
  3. Check that the key or fob is present and its battery is not depleted.
  4. If the lock will not release or the warning remains, do not force the wheel; contact roadside assistance or a repairer.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the steering is locked or the vehicle will not start normally. If the warning stays on after the lock releases, follow the manual and have it checked before relying on the vehicle.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
