What it means
This is a gear-shift suggestion intended to help with efficient driving; it does not usually signal a fault. Its green colour commonly indicates guidance or information, but the symbol and when it appears vary by manufacturer.
What the symbol looks like: An upward-pointing arrow, sometimes beside a gear or shift symbol, indicates that the vehicle recommends selecting a higher gear.
Why it comes on
- The engine speed and vehicle load suit a higher gear
- The vehicle is being driven in a manual or selectable-gear mode
- The driver is accelerating steadily under light load
- A driving mode is displaying shift guidance
What to do
- Check the owner’s manual for how the indicator works
- Shift up when safe and appropriate for traffic, road, and engine load
- Do not shift up if doing so would make the vehicle struggle or reduce control
- If the indicator appears with a transmission warning or unusual shifting, have the vehicle checked
Can I keep driving?
You can continue driving; this is normally an advisory indicator. Do not follow the suggestion when a lower gear is needed for safe acceleration, climbing, or control.
Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
