Red lights

Parking brake applied

What it means

This indicator usually means the parking brake is applied. Red commonly signals an applied brake or a brake warning, but the symbol and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer; check the owner's manual.

What the symbol looks like: A circle with a capital letter P inside it (drawn as a bold stroke), with a curved bracket on each side of the circle.

Why it comes on

  • The parking brake has been applied
  • The parking brake lever or pedal has not been fully released
  • An electric parking brake has not fully disengaged
  • A parking-brake position switch is faulty

What to do

  1. Keep the vehicle stopped while checking the indicator.
  2. Release the parking brake using the vehicle's normal control.
  3. Check the owner's manual if the indicator does not go out.
  4. If it remains on or the brakes drag, stop and arrange professional help.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only after the parking brake is fully released and the indicator goes out. Avoid driving with the brake engaged, since it can overheat and damage the brakes.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
