What it means
This indicates that the fuel-filler door may be open or not fully latched; on some vehicles it can also refer to a loose or missing fuel cap. Amber commonly means to check the filler area soon, but the exact symbol, colour, and monitoring behaviour vary by manufacturer.
What the symbol looks like: A fuel-pump outline beside a fuel-filler flap, sometimes with an open-flap mark or warning indicator.
Why it comes on
- The fuel-filler door was left open
- The door is not fully latched
- The fuel cap is loose or missing on a vehicle that monitors it
- A filler-door latch or position sensor has a fault
What to do
- When safely parked, check that the fuel-filler door is closed and latched.
- If your vehicle has a fuel cap, check that it is present and fitted as described in the owner's manual.
- Restart or drive as described in the owner's manual to see whether the indicator clears.
- If the warning remains with the door closed, have the latch, sensor, or fuel-cap system checked.
Can I keep driving?
If the fuel door is simply unlatched, close it before driving. If the cap is missing, fuel is leaking, or you smell fuel, stop safely and address the problem before continuing.
Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
