What it means
This light or display indicates that the forward collision warning system has detected a possible collision or is warning that the system is unavailable. Red commonly signals an urgent collision warning, but the symbol, colour, and whether it stays on vary by manufacturer; check the owner’s manual.
What the symbol looks like: A vehicle symbol with star-shaped impact marks ahead, sometimes shown with a warning triangle or the word “BRAKE.”
Why it comes on
- The system detects a vehicle or obstacle ahead and judges a collision may be imminent.
- A dirty, blocked, or iced-over camera or radar sensor.
- Poor visibility or conditions that limit sensor performance.
- A fault or temporary interruption in the collision warning system.
What to do
- If a collision warning is active, look ahead and brake or steer if it is safe to do so.
- Keep a safe distance and do not rely on the system to prevent a collision.
- When safe, check the camera and radar areas for dirt, ice, or obstruction and clear them gently.
- If the warning remains or a fault message appears, consult the owner’s manual and arrange an inspection.
Can I keep driving?
If it is an active collision alert, respond immediately and do not continue as if the road is clear. If it indicates a system fault, you can generally drive cautiously, but the warning system may not be available.
Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
