What it means
This warning indicates a possible fault in the electric parking-brake system or that it could not apply or release as expected. Amber generally means the system needs checking soon, but the colour and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer; consult the owner's manual.
What the symbol looks like: A circle with a capital letter P inside it, curved brackets on each side, and a small exclamation mark at the top right.
Why it comes on
- A weak 12-volt battery or low system voltage
- A fault in the parking-brake switch or control module
- A problem with a parking-brake actuator or motor
- A wiring or connection fault
What to do
- Park on level ground and keep the vehicle secured.
- Check the owner's manual for the warning and any displayed message.
- Use the normal parking-brake control once, following the manual's instructions.
- If the brake will not apply or release, do not force it; arrange professional help.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible if the parking brake is fully released and the brakes behave normally, but have the fault checked promptly. Do not park on a slope if you cannot confirm the vehicle is secured.
Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
