Red lights

Door open

What it means

One or more doors are open or not registering as latched. Red commonly signals that the vehicle is not secure for driving; the symbol, colour, and door identification vary by manufacturer.

What the symbol looks like: An outline of a car with one or more doors shown open commonly indicates that a door is not fully closed.

Why it comes on

  • A door is not fully shut
  • A door latch or striker is misaligned or obstructed
  • A latch-position sensor or switch has failed
  • Wiring or a connector at the door is faulty

What to do

  1. Stop safely before checking the warning.
  2. Check every door, including rear passenger doors, and close any that are ajar.
  3. Check that no seat belt, clothing, or object is caught in a door.
  4. If the warning remains, do not assume the door is latched; consult the manual and arrange a repair.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive with a door visibly ajar or unable to latch securely. If all doors are secure but the warning stays on, drive only if necessary and have the fault checked promptly.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
