Red lights

Boot (trunk) open

What it means

The boot, tailgate, or a related closure is open or its sensor reports it as open. Red commonly signals a closure that needs attention before driving; the symbol, colour, and which closures it monitors vary by manufacturer.

What the symbol looks like: A rear view of a car with its boot or tailgate raised commonly indicates that it is open or not latched.

Why it comes on

  • The boot or tailgate is not fully closed
  • Luggage or another object is obstructing the latch
  • A latch or striker is damaged or misaligned
  • A closure-position sensor, switch, or wire has failed

What to do

  1. Stop safely before checking the boot or tailgate.
  2. Move any item preventing it from closing.
  3. Close it firmly and confirm it is latched.
  4. If it will not latch, secure the load only as the owner's manual permits and arrange repair or assistance.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive with an unsecured boot or tailgate, especially if it can obstruct your view or let cargo fall out. If it is latched but the warning remains, check the manual and have the sensor or latch inspected.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
