School zone

Expect children on or near the road and follow any speed limit or time restrictions shown.

Watch for children near the road and be ready to slow down. Read any displayed speed limit and the conditions under which it applies.

The Vienna Convention’s A,13 warns of children near schools or playgrounds. Its permitted warning shapes include a red-bordered triangle and a yellow diamond.

In the United States, S5-1 displays a school speed limit that applies when its beacons flash. Australia’s R4-230N is a rectangular New South Wales sign showing a school-zone speed limit, operating times and SCHOOL DAYS.

How it looks in each country

Official sign in each country; the code is its number in the national rules. Signs that come in two directions show the left and the right version.
