What is the Mercedes-Benz CLA?

The CLA is a compact car with the low roofline and sweeping profile of a four-door coupé. Mercedes-Benz introduced it as a more style-led member of its compact range. A Shooting Brake estate version has also been part of the CLA line-up.

The CLA arrived in 2013 and became Mercedes-Benz’s first compact car in the US market. Its sleek shape gave buyers a different take on the brand’s compact cars.

CLA generations

The first generation, C117/X117, ran from 2013 to 2019. It established the four-door coupé shape and added the Shooting Brake body style.

The second generation, C118/X118, followed from 2019 to 2025. It kept both body styles and brought a more digital cabin with Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX system. The C174/C178 generation began in 2025.

Engines, power and fuel consumption

The CLA has been offered with petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid power, as well as electric versions. In EU figures from 2013 to 2025, engines range from 1.3 to 2.1 litres and power from 80 kW (109 PS) to 310 kW (421 PS). UK versions reach 421 kW (572 PS).

The lowest EU figure for petrol, diesel and hybrid versions is 1.2 L/100 km on WLTP. The EU plug-in hybrid low is 0.9 L/100 km, a weighted figure that assumes some driving is electric. In the US, the EPA low is 7.1 L/100 km, or 33 MPG combined. Canada’s low is 7.8 L/100 km on the 5-cycle test. These figures reflect different procedures: Europe uses WLTP or NEDC, the US uses EPA, and Canada uses the 5-cycle test.

Where was the CLA sold?

The CLA appears in EU registration figures from 2013 to 2025, UK figures from 2013 to 2026, US figures from 2014 to 2027, and Canadian figures from 2014 to 2026. French figures cover 2013 to 2015. EU registrations total 1,110,425. Among the leading EU versions were 2.1-litre diesels rated at 100 kW (136 PS).
