What is the Kia Niro?
The Niro is Kia’s compact crossover, offered as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric car. It combines a raised driving position with a cabin shaped for everyday use. Introduced in 2016, it was Kia’s first model developed on a dedicated eco-car platform.
The first generation ran from 2017–2022, followed by the second from 2023 onward. The redesign carried forward the Niro’s mix of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
Engines and power
Hybrid and plug-in hybrid Niros use a 1.6-litre engine, alongside fully electric versions. EU figures show listed power from 27 kW (37 PS) to 150 kW (204 PS). In the UK, the range reaches 204 kW (277 PS); Canada lists an electric version at 150 kW (204 PS). In a hybrid, the quoted system output includes the electric motor as well as the petrol engine.
EU registrations include conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The plug-in hybrid can run on electricity, and its official weighted fuel figure assumes that some driving is electric.
How economical is the Kia Niro?
The lowest listed EU figure for non-plug-in versions is 3.4 L/100 km on WLTP. The plug-in hybrid’s weighted EU figure is 0.8 L/100 km on WLTP; it assumes some driving is electric, so it is not the same kind of measure as petrol-only consumption. UK figures reach 1.4 L/100 km on WLTP for non-plug-in versions and 1.3 L/100 km on NEDC for the plug-in hybrid.
In the US, the EPA rates the lowest listed non-plug-in figure at 4.4 L/100 km, or 53 MPG combined, and the plug-in hybrid at 4.9 L/100 km. Canada’s 5-cycle figures are 4.4 and 4.8 L/100 km respectively. WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and Canada’s 5-cycle procedure differ, so the results are not directly comparable.
Questions and answers
Which Kia Niro generations are listed?
The first generation is listed as 2017–2022 and the second as 2023 onward.
Does the Niro come as a fully electric car?
Yes. It is available as an electric car, hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
What does the plug-in hybrid’s 0.8 L/100 km figure mean?
It is the EU WLTP weighted figure, which assumes that some driving is electric.
New cars registered in the EU (plus Norway and Iceland), from the European Environment Agency. Figures on the NEDC procedure until 2020 and on WLTP from 2021; versions are grouped by engine and power, with their number of registrations.
