What it means
The exhaust flow control valve B reports a position circuit low condition. Exhaust routing for back-pressure or noise control cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Exhaust flow control valve B changes exhaust routing to manage back-pressure or noise. The control module compares the valve’s position feedback with its expected electrical range; P2BFE sets when the position signal is detected as too low.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power
- Poor acceleration
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and relevant live data to see when valve B’s position signal fell low and whether engine power was limited.
- With the exhaust cool, inspect valve B’s connector and harness for corrosion, damage, loose pins, or wiring rubbed through to ground.
- Check the connector terminals for corrosion or poor contact that could pull down the position signal.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the position-signal wire for a short to ground and verify its continuity with the circuit powered down as specified by the manufacturer.
- If wiring and connections are sound, test valve B’s position sensor and compare its output through the operating range with the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded valve B connector terminals and restore a secure connection.
- Repair the position-signal wire shorted to ground.
- Replace the failed position sensor or valve B assembly if its signal remains low with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Reduced power and poor acceleration can make merging or overtaking unsafe, so avoid hard acceleration and long trips. Stop if the engine runs poorly or power drops sharply; continued operation can affect exhaust control and emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
