OBD-II fault code

P2BD4: Motor Electronics Coolant Pump C Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The motor electronics coolant pump C (cooling the drive inverter or motor) reports a control circuit/open condition. Power electronics cooling may be impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Motor electronics coolant pump C circulates coolant to help control the temperature of the drive inverter or motor electronics. The hybrid control module monitors the pump's control circuit and sets this code when it detects an open, so cooling flow may be reduced and the electronics can overheat.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in pump control wire
  2. Open pump motor
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Hybrid-system warning light or message
  • Reduced power
  • Power electronics overheating warning

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check hybrid-system live data for pump C's command, status, and any motor-electronics temperature or overheating warnings.
  2. With the vehicle cool, inspect pump C's accessible connector and wiring for a disconnected plug, damaged harness, or terminal pushed back into the connector.
  3. Check the coolant level and visible leaks in the motor-electronics cooling circuit, following the vehicle's service information.
  4. Use the supported scan-tool output test to command pump C and check its control circuit and motor continuity against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Repair the open circuit or failed pump, then verify pump operation and temperature behaviour before returning the vehicle to normal use.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose pump C connector.
  • Repair an open or damaged pump control wire.
  • Restore a pushed-back or damaged connector terminal.
  • Replace pump C if its motor is confirmed open or it fails the commanded operation test.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced cooling can overheat the inverter or motor electronics and lead to reduced power or a shutdown. Avoid driving if an overheating warning appears; stop safely and let the vehicle cool.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
