OBD-II fault code

P0CFD: Control Pilot Charging Switch A Stuck Off

What it means

The control pilot charging switch A reports a stuck off condition. SAE J1772 charging signal handshake may be compromised.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Control pilot charging switch A is monitored during the charging handshake. This code sets when the module expects the switch to turn on but continues to see it off, which can prevent charging from being authorized or maintained.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Charging switch A stuck in the off position
  2. Switch or switch circuit fault

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and charging live data to confirm that switch A remains off when the module expects it to change state.
  2. Inspect switch A and its connector for damage, corrosion, loose fit, or a pin pushed back into the connector.
  3. Use the vehicle’s service information to check whether operating the switch produces a state change in scan-tool data.
  4. With the charging circuit safely isolated as directed by the manufacturer, test switch A for a stuck-off condition and check its wiring for an open.
  5. Check continuity and connector pin fit against the manufacturer’s specification before diagnosing a control module fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded switch A connection.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of switch A wiring.
  • Replace switch A if it remains off when operated and the circuit is sound.
  • Repair or replace the charging control module only if the switch and circuit pass their specified tests.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible if the vehicle has no other faults, but charging may not start or may stop. Do not begin a trip that depends on charging until you have confirmed a working alternative.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
