What it means
The ABS module monitors its operating temperature. It sets this code when the measured temperature exceeds the module’s calibrated limit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The ABS control module monitors its internal temperature to protect its electronics. C004F sets when the reported temperature exceeds the module's calibrated limit; sustained ABS activity, poor cooling, electrical overload, or a faulty temperature-sensing circuit can contribute.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Prolonged or repeated ABS operation
- High ambient temperature or poor module cooling
- Electrical overload or internal module fault
- Damaged temperature sensing circuit
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and module temperature to determine whether the fault followed prolonged ABS use or occurred under ordinary conditions.
- Allow the system to cool, then check whether the temperature reading returns to a plausible level and whether the code returns.
- Inspect the ABS module area and connector for heat damage, corrosion, blocked airflow, or wiring damage.
- Check the module's power and ground circuits and any temperature-sensor wiring for shorts, opens, or poor connections using the wiring diagram.
- If external causes and circuits are sound, test the module temperature sensing and internal operation according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Allow an overheated module to cool and address conditions causing repeated ABS activation where identified.
- Repair damaged power, ground, or temperature-sensing wiring and connector terminals.
- Correct a cooling or installation issue if it is obstructing the module's specified heat dissipation.
- Replace the ABS control module if its temperature reading or internal operation fails the manufacturer's tests.
Can I keep driving?
ABS and stability control may be temporarily unavailable while the module is overheated, though conventional braking may remain. Let the system cool and drive cautiously only if braking feels normal; stop if brake performance changes or a brake warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
